An act of worship
Under the Old Covenant, it was very normal that all the people of Israel would give their tithes, as an act of worship. Even more, this was what God required from all of them (Malachi 3:8-12). It was and is considered an act of worship and an act of righteousness. Under the New Covenant that requirement still stands, but the stakes are even higher. Jesus Christ has paid for our lives with His Own Blood. He purchased your life for eternity. That means that now everything belongs to Him. So no longer 10% but 100%.
Now we know that many preachers love to use this to beg for your money. Rest assured, we're not going to do that. Instead we want to emphasize that when everything you have belongs to the Lord, it is He Who should decide what happens with it. Not you. Not a preacher. Not anyone else. He knows what you need, He knows the desires of your own heart and He knows the right timing for everything. God has a plan for everything, including for your money.
How can you tell if He wants you to give something? If you ended up on this page while having an amount in mind and the willingness to sow it, then that's it (Phil. 2:13). There is not a single place where God allows us to challenge and try Him, except in Malachi 3:10-11.
“Try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the Lord of hosts.
If you don't have any amount on your heart, nor that the Holy Spirit tells you to give, then don't do it. It's that easy. Let Him decide what you give and to whom you give it to.
